Intro
Welcome! I’m Gary Yek, and this is Seven Lines In The Sand. This collection of modern art pieces consists of over 1000 pen-on-paper sketches, generally in the style of Minimalism, Conceptual, and Abstract Art. The driving force of each piece is its title, ranging from thought provoking to unfiltered fun. Additionally, the sketches, or concepts, are being re-imagined as 3D paint-on-layered-glass “final” versions. My latest full-length video presents all sketches to date - complete with original ambient/minimalist music score - in sets of 127. I like prime numbers.
A Sample Concept
In addition to being the collection and video title, Seven Lines In The Sand is one of the sketches. It’s a twist on the popular idiom “draw a line in the sand”. This usually involves leaving something behind and moving on. It can be a life-altering change or even an epiphanal realization. Taken together, these moments mold us into who we are as people. And who am I? I’m that guy on the cover - a hyper-minimal self-portrait consisting of only seven lines. This Seven Lines In The Sand character is a positive fellow - always thinking, always smiling, always improving. He sets the tone for the entire collection of works.
Bio
I am a self-taught scribbler, so instead I will explain how this project came to light. In 1979, I found myself in a rather mundane day job. To fight boredom, I spontaneously drew 59 simplistic concept sketches - all with fun titles. Had lots of laughs and tossed them into a drawer. Years later they resurfaced and I promptly drew another 73 sketches. More laughs. Repeat over the years; the collection is now HUGE. Eventually I realized this really was its own thing. Seven Lines In The Sand has since grown to encompass 3D paint-on-layered-glass versions, presentation videos, original music scores, curated printed books, new sketch concepts, and exhibitions.
Thank you!
Gary
